From a lifecycle perspective, GI channels are best viewed as low-risk, indoor structural components, not universal solutions. 

HDG (Hot-Dip Galvanized) Slotted Channels: The UAE Outdoor Standard 

Hot-dip galvanizing is widely regarded as the benchmark for corrosion protection in harsh environments, and for good reason. HDG slotted channels are galvanized after fabrication, producing zinc coatings typically ranging from 50–100 microns, metallurgically bonded to the steel substrate. 

In practical terms, this provides:

Powder coating introduces a polymer-based protective barrier, offering excellent control and surface durability. When applied correctly, powder-coated slotted channels deliver:

  • High resistance to abrasion and mechanical wear

In the UAE, powder-coated channels are most effective when:

  • Combined with galvanization (duplex systems) for added protection 

However, UV exposure and thermal cycling remain critical considerations. Without proper coating formulation and surface preparation, prolonged sun exposure can lead to chalking, micro-cracking, and eventual coating failure. For this reason, powder coating alone is not recommended for fully exposed rooftops or coastal zones unless specified as part of a duplex protection system.
